Quote Of The Week: Be Brief Or Be Ignored

Stop being boring with these thoughts on brevity—and download the poster to put on your office door. The office blowhard will get the hint.

Every Monday, tune in to Fast Company Leadership for a quote to get your week started right.

This week’s quote comes from Joseph McCormack, author of Brief: Making a Bigger Impact by Saying Less.:

“Brevity is an essential skill that can propel people’s career in an age where the people that they’re talking to are overwhelmed.”

If you’re struggling to grab your audience’s attention—on the Internet or in the board room—say more with less.

Here’s how to avoid a longwinded rant, from Lisa Evans’s article “Less Is More: Why You’re Saying Too Much And Getting Ignored:”

Sitting at a stop light near my house while running errands today I spotted a group of bobbers rolling past heading toward Downtown Ventura. After stopping by the gas station I rolled down Main Street to see if I could spot them and take some photos… lo! There they were!

Not one, not two, but SEVEN custom bobbers all in one spot. A friend of mine told me they had just been up at See See’s in Portland and that they’re road tripping from Mexico City. Gotta love the Powerplant bike, seriously good looking.

Capsule — arguably the most influential men’s fashion tradeshow in North America — started from an unlikely source: Shiny, expensive t-shirts.

The first Capsule show back in 2007 featured just 45 designers. Now the show carves out room for 777 designers from 25 countries around the world.

BMPW founders: Edina Sultanik, Deirdre Maloney, and Minya Quirk

"A great candidate for Capsule is a brand that’s made by real people who love what they’re doing on a small to mid-sized level," says Minya Quirk.

Friends at Cycle World are good friends to have.

When Garrett asked if I could join him and some of the Bonnier Motorcycle Group for a private day with Danny Walker, there was no question. I was in.
